In 1919 Hermann Hesse wrote Klingsor’s Last Summer in Montagnola. The reader can easily recognize in the descriptions of the places of the story the villages Hesse used to walk by during his first summer in Ticino, such as Pazzallo, Carona, Pambio-Noranco, Carabietta, and Montagnola. Following the footsteps of Klingsor, the artist Sighanda captured many of these places in her watercolours which, as in the tradition of the «Carnet de voyage», reflect the story and are displayed in combination with photoghaphs, texts, and watercolours by Hermann Hesse.
Curators: Sighanda and Matteo Genini
Opening: Friday 12 September, 18.30
Sighanda is the artist’s name of the singer Dominique Fidanza. During the opening she will give a 30-minute concert.

Hermann Hesse published several literary articles in the satyrical magazine Simplicissimus. The exhibition shows the various facets of this collaboration through letters, photos, drawings, and engravings from Semplicissimus. On the occasion of the commemoration of the «First World War Centenary», the period in which Simplicissimus from being a critical voice of the empire turned into a propaganda sheet, Hermann Hesse’s attitude acquired a particular meaning. Unlike the magazine’s publishers, Hesse expressed his opinion against the war and explicitly defended humanity.
Concept: Eva Zimmermann.
Exhibition catalogue (Italian / German).
Opening: Friday 18 April, 18.30
With the support of Genossenschaft zum Baugarten.
The short story Klingsor’s Last Summer is deeply autobiographical and reflects, in the character of the painter Klingsor, Hermann Hesse’s state of mind in the summer of 1919, which was characterized by an intense zest for life, but also by despair and yearning for death.
With Antonio Ballerio (Italian) and Rudolf Cornelius (German).
In Italian and German; admission free.
Focus of this evening of Lieder is the musical setting of poems by Hermann Hesse by composer Justus Hermann Wetzel (1879– 1973), who kept an intense correspondence with the writer. In particular during the Nazi Period, when Wetzel’s performances had been prohibited, his intellectual exchange with Hesse and the confrontation with his work gave him comfort and encouragement.
With Peter Schöne (baritone) and Eduard Stan (piano).
In collaboration with Ceresio Estate; free admission
